The blizzard came like a verdict, whitening the river to a ribbon of breath beyond our windows. Mother said the manor always groaned in storms, but tonight the walls seemed to remember. I found Grandfather’s ledger tucked behind the nursery grate, charred along one edge, as if it had smoldered for years. The entries were clipped, tidy, until December of 1859, when his handwriting staggered: “Kawaguma.
