Saddle Up for Sunday Dinner

January air bites like raw onion when I yank open Mama June’s Kitchen. The bell over the door is busted, so it just coughs. Inside, heat from the fryers fogs my glasses and Uncle Darius blasts old-school while I stack cornbread. Then something clatters in the alley—wood on brick, like somebody dragging furniture. I peek out and see a saddle. A whole leather saddle, upright, rocking like it’s breathing. It scoots forward on two splintery sticks, snorting dust, and squares up to a “For Lease” sign nailed to Mr. Leon’s wall. The saddle jabs the sign hard enough to bend it. Do I run, or help it finish and claim our block?
