By the time I found the station, the snow had gone to rot. April in the deep woods isn't spring so much as surrender. The drifts collapsed inward, exposing last year's leaves in black, slick heaps; the trails became rivulets; everything smelled like thawed dirt and things too stubborn to die. I had been walking for three days on a stolen map and half a packet of crackers, following the old fire road until it forgot itself.
